Golf Society's Captain's Day in Drogheda

23 August 2025

Golf society go south for Captain's Day and back to NOHC for a BBQ

On Saturday 23rd August, twenty-five of the golfing society members and guests made the short trip to Seapoint Golf Club in Drogheda to attend Peter Graham’s Captain's Day.

Seapoint Golf Club over the years has held many great events and professional competitions, but none more prestigious than Newry Olympic Hockey Club’s Golf Society’s Captain's Day.

With the weather conditions and course all in perfect condition for golf, it was long standing hockey club and society member Mark McGrath who came out on top to claim his 1st society victory on Captains Day. Mark played extremely steady golf over both 9’s, 18 points on the front nine, and an extremely impressive 20 points on the back nine was enough to claim top spot.

In 2nd place, beaten on the count back was Ryan McIlroy. Ryan came out of the traps extremely quick, hitting 14 points over the first 5 holes. Unfortunately, Ryan's back nine didn’t match his front nine and a double bogey on the last hole was costly, preventing Ryan taking top spot.

In 3rd place was last year's Captains Day winner Richard McGivern, Richard had a steady 37 points, but no score on the par 5 8th hole would prove costly preventing Richard claiming top spot.

Other winners on the day...

  • Longest Drive Winner was Davy Irwin

  • Closest to the Pin was Captain Peter Graham

Afterwards all members and guests came back to the Hockey Club for a BBQ and prize giving, this turned out to be a brilliant night’s craic with everyone enjoying themselves. Sunday was not a good day though!!

The Golf Society committee would like to thank all members and guests who attended making this a well-supported and brilliant Captain's Day which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The society committee would also like to thank Seapoint Golf Club for use of their course which everyone really enjoyed.

The next outing is the last outing for 2025 in Portstewart Golf Club on the Riverside Course on the 21st of September, this will also conclude the “Golfer of the Year 2025” which is keenly contested with a lot of people still in the running to take the top spot for 2025.

Reminder to everyone to pay their £10 hockey club associate membership for the year if not already done so.

New members can sign-up here.
