NOHC Soccer Team - Carnbane Summer League 1978

How many faces can you recognise?

In 1978, the club decided to enter a team in the local Carnbane Summer League to have some fun and keep fit for the next hockey season.

Entered in the Third Division of the Summer League, the team surprised many with their soccer skills and speed on the pitch, ending up League and Cup champions, with some big wins against the opposition along the way.

At the end of the season several of the players were invited by Newry Town FC to come along for trials and join in early season training, giving those selected a tough decision to either make the move to football or stay with hockey for their winter sport. It was through this that John Whitten decided to give soccer a go and went on to play for Newry Town and for Linfield FC, before returning to play hockey for the Olympic once again in later years.

The club also entered a team in the Carnbane Summer League in 1979, although this time the team was registered in the Second Division which proved to be more of a challenge with the opposition now wiser to the speed and talent of the hockey/soccer all-stars!
