Newry Olympic ladies 1s start their new season with a close game against Donaghadee

Newry ladies played their first match of the season on Saturday 17th September at home against Donaghadee ladies.

From the first whistle Donaghadee were quick to drive the ball forward towards the Newry circle, but were intercepted by the Newry sweeper Chrissie McAuley. It wasn’t long however before Donaghadee’s centre forward drove the ball into the circle and scored their first goal.

Minutes into the second quarter, Newry centre forward Rose Clarke won a penalty corner, but it was well defended by the Donaghadee side. With the constant pressure from the opposition, Newry had to work hard to defend and pick out passes to the midfield and forwards to try and create more chances. Towards the end of the second quarter Donaghadee managed to score their second goal from open play, leaving Newry 2 nil down at half time.

The Olympic girls were determined to get a goal going into the second half and came out more focused. They worked hard to create better linkages, which eventually resulted in winning a penalty corner. From the set piece, Carolyn Ferris received the ball at the top of the circle and drove the ball into the bottom right corner for a great goal.

With only one quarter to go Newry fought hard to equalise, but with the Donaghadee’s strong defence they were unable to find the net for a second time and the game ended with a 2-1 win to Donaghadee.
