Junior League 3 Cup Final

Newry Olympic 2s faced an experienced Bangor 3s side in the Junior 3 League cup final at Stormont on Saturday 7th May.

Going by recent league games both teams knew it was going to be a tight match.

From the start, both sides played their way into the game with a lot of possession in midfield, however it was Newry who took the lead on nine minutes when Josh Porter guided home a Jeremy Greer cross.

Newry continued to carve out the best chances, but were caught out when a hopeful ball was deflected in by the Bangor forward right at the end of the first quarter.

Newry came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second quarter and were rewarded when Simon McCafferty slipped the ball to Ivor Lutton who made no mistake with a first time finish, to score his first goal of the season.

Bangor were still proving to be dangerous on the counter attack and managed to force a number of penalty corners. It was from one of these a goal bound shot was illegally stopped by a Newry defender on the line and a penalty stroke was awarded, however this was sent high and wide to ensure Newry’s lead remained intact.

It was soon Olympic’s turn to be awarded a penalty stroke and captain Simon McCafferty made no mistake when he fired past the stranded keeper.

Newry’s midfield started to control the game winning the majority of 50/50’s and supporting the forwards in the attacks.

The fourth quarter was quite a feisty affair with numerous cards awarded to both sides. Newry were down to eight players at one stage, but the Belfast Road men held out to deservedly lift the Junior 3 League Cup.
