Firsts run out of steam against league table top challengers Queens

Newry hosted league chasing Queens on Saturday 18 February and after a spirited fight eventually ran out of steam conceding three late goals to go down 5-1.

The students started brightly and scored six minutes in from a well worked passing move down the left hand side. This appeared to wake the home side up as they started to push forward, but were unable to capitalise on a number of short corners.

Although Queens had plenty of possession, they were unable to break the Newry defence down again as they went in one up at the break.

Queens scored their second early in the third quarter catching the Olympic side cold, however they fought back and pulled one back through David England to make it 2-1. It could have been two all when Jeremy Greer broke away and wriggled free in the circle only to see his effort cleared off the line. Josh Porter had a golden opportunity, but could only blaze over the bar at full stretch with the goal at his mercy

Queens utilized their full squad and as the game wore on Newry started to run out of legs. With 8 minutes remaining the away side got their third, effectively putting the game to bed. However they did not hold back and scored two more late goals to go away with a flattering 5-1 victory.
