Newry Olympic ladies 1s lose out in close game

Newry ladies travelled to Cookstown on Saturday 15th October.

From the whistle, Cookstown dominated the Newry half for most of the first quarter putting the visitors under pressure, but with strong defending from Jodie Freeman, Chrissie McAuley and Suzanne Gilmore, the score remained nil nil.

The second quarter was much the same, Cookstown constantly keeping the pressure on, trying to create opportunities to score. The Newry girls worked well in defending their circle, giving Cookstown no chances.

Going into the second half, Cookstown were beginning to tire allowing Olympic to create more open play and were edging closer to the Cookstown circle. However, it wasn’t long before the opposition entered the Newry circle and despite strong defending from the Newry backs, Cookstown managed to get a scrappy goal putting them one nil up.

Nearing the final whistle, Newry’s right mid and captain Kathryn Baird won a free from just inside the Cookstown half and she played a crash ball into the home side's circle hitting a Cookstown foot. Newry were unfortunate not to be awarded a short corner and were given a long corner instead, where Kathryn dribbled the ball into the circle just as the final whistle blew.

A proud performance by the Newry ladies who demonstrated fantastic defending and determination throughout the whole match keeping the score line one nil, and giving the Cookstown side a great competitive game.
