Good performance but no points for 1s in Belfast

Newry Olympic 1s were on the road on Saturday 19 November, as they travelled to face Belfast Harlequins at Deramore Park.

With a depleted squad they knew they would be up against it from the start. However, Newry started brightly with Corey Large getting an opportunity within the first minute. This was to be their only chance in the opening quarter as Harlequins dominated possession for long periods.

There was bad news for Newry in the second quarter when Daryl Barlow pulled up with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Matty Russell for his first appearance in 18 months.

Harlequins forced a number of corners with Jeremy Greer clearing two off the line, but they were reduced to very little from open play.

In the second half the home side came on ever stronger, but again a resolute defence held them out. Newry’s luck did eventually run out when late in the third quarter Quin's hit on the break and scored at the front post.

With time running out Olympic fired more men forward, but could not find an equaliser as the home side came away 1-0 victors.

Newry Olympic 1s:

R. McGivern, D. Barlow, C. Henning (Capt), D. England, G. Moffett, J. Greer, K. Fletcher, N. Lutton, A. Baird, C. Large, J. Porter, M. Russell
